I've always been annoyed by the fact that the armors in Core are so well-defined. Want metal armor that gives +2 AC? Too bad, because all you've got is leather. This rule abstracts the nature of armor, making the benefits dependent only on the construction of the armor and not directly on the material. Plate bikinis might qualify as Very Light Armor, while dragon-leather jerkins may be interpreted as Heavy Armor.

Conversion Notes
This houserule is intended for use in Iron Heroes. It can be used in a standard d20 game by replacing the references to DR with an AC bonus equal to the size of the DR die. For example, Heavy Armor would provide a +6 armor bonus to AC rather than providing 1d6 DR.
Credit Where It's Due
This rule is from A'koss. I use it myself, and only post it here because otherwise it would be lost forever.
